Our Mission

Our mission is to collect, preserve and lend printed sheet music and to promote the appreciation, knowledge and performance of music.

Our History & Evolution

The Bagaduce Music Lending Library was founded in 1983 as a not-for-profit, one-of-a-kind music library with a remarkable collection of printed sheet music of varying genres. This music collection is the cornerstone of who we are; more recently, our Mission has expanded to include more emphasis on Music Performance and Music Education. The name of the organization has recently changed from Bagaduce Music Lending Library or BMLL to Bagaduce Music.  Bagaduce Music is located in the town of Blue Hill on the mid-coast of Maine.

Bagaduce Music was built and largely sustained by musicians and music lovers who found great value in music; we endeavor to preserve our vast collection for future generations and to share it with as many people and organizations as we can.  At the heart of our organization is our dedicated staff and our intrepid crew of volunteers.

We began in the garage of one of our founders, where the Bagaduce River meets the Penobscot Bay. We outgrew our original space rather quickly and then moved into a giant red barn in Blue Hill.  We moved yet again in the summer of 2017 and this time on to a beautiful new campus at 49 South Street in Blue Hill, our current home.  The latter was made possible through a generous lead gift from Jan and Bob Marville who donated the land and the buildings; additionally, we mounted a vigorous capital campaign and were able to build our new Library building and renovate the Performance Hall through the kindness of many music lovers in our greater community.

Bagaduce Music makes a treasure trove of music available to the public.  We also enable a number of music organizations to manage costs by borrowing music.  We sponsor beautiful concerts and programs as a way of sharing our collection with the local community, the State of Maine, with our nation and with the world.

More than One Million Sheets of Music

Our Collection is comprised of more than one million sheets of music or nearly 300,000 separate titles; this expands almost daily.  We have grown to become an international resource center for printed music and scores and housing many collections of music representing a multitude of genres. Our borrowers come from all fifty states and from more than 27 countries.  Most of our Collection has come to us by donations over the years. Explore our Collection.
