The Double Reed Collection of Josef Marx

Oboist and collector, Don Cohn, has given us over 3,000 titles of music belonging to his mentor, oboist, publisher and musicologist Josef Marx (1913-1978). This music consists of solo and chamber works, with great emphasis on double reeds and wind ensembles. Many of these works were new to our collection and some are quite rare.
Josef Marx was one of the finest oboists of his time.  He played, recorded and was soloist with many major symphonies, including the Palestine Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the American Ballet Theatre Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic.  He performed under conductors Toscanini, Dorati, Klemperer, Beecham, Reiner, Mitropoulos, Szell, Walter, Boulez and Mehta.

Marx's oboe playing inspired many compositions to be written for him by composers such as Elliott Carter, Gunther Schuller, Donald Martino and Isaac Nemiroff, and Marx premiered many of these works.  During his long career, Marx also played with a number of highly regarded chamber ensembles, including the Adolph Chamber Players, the Bernard Krainis Baroque Ensemble, the Hartt Chamber Players and the Group for Contemporary Music at Columbia University.

In 1946 Marx founded the music publishing house McGinnis and Marx, whose publications of Baroque and twentieth-century wind music have been internationally distributed.  His publication of many contemporary works gave early recognition to many composers who later became well-known, including Donald Martino, Stefan Wolpe, Isaac Nemiroff, Harvey Sollberger, Gunther Schuller and John Harbison.

In 1964 Josef Marx was appointed to the faculty of the C.W. Post Center of Long Insland University, where he became a Full Professor of musicology.  In addition to music history, Marx also taught oboe and conducted the chamber ensemble at the college.
